A symphonic Grand Tour from Mozart’s Prague to Mendelssohn’s Scottish ruins.
In 1787 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart travelled to Prague with his family. In his luggage he carried the manuscript of a new symphony – grand in scope, harmonically daring and with a flair that was a match for any of his operas. One of these, 'Le nozze di Figaro', was enjoying such a success in the city at the time that expectations were running high for the planned benefit concert by the new superstar. Mozart fully rose to the occasion with the premiere of this 'Symphony No. 38', which has been linked to the Golden City ever since.

En 1787, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart s’installe à Prague avec sa famille. Dans ses malles : le manuscrit d’une nouvelle symphonie. Grandiose et audacieuse sur le plan harmonique, cette œuvre allie fluidité et majesté, rivalisant avec ses opéras. À cette époque, « Le nozze di Figaro » triomphent dans la ville, faisant de Mozart une véritable vedette. Les attentes pour le concert de bienfaisance étaient donc très grandes, et il y répondit brillamment avec la première de sa « 38e symphonie », désormais indissociable de la Ville dorée.

Een symfonische Grand Tour, van Mozarts Praag tot de Schotse ruïnes van Mendelssohn.
In 1787 trok Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart met zijn gezin naar Praag. In zijn koffers: het manuscript van een nieuwe symfonie – groots van opzet, harmonisch gedurfd en met een flair die niet moest onderdoen voor zijn opera’s. Een daarvan, 'Le nozze di Figaro', was op dat moment zo’n succes in de stad dat de verwachtingen voor het geplande benefietconcert van de nieuwe superster hooggespannen waren. Mozart loste ze helemaal in met de première van deze '38ste symfonie', vanaf dan voor eeuwig verbonden met de Gouden Stad.
